From exploration targets to mines: Creating long-term value

Montero is pushing the boundaries of exploration in Chile. We spoke with Dr Tony Harwood about how the company turns promising targets into long-term value for investors:

Q: Montero has a strong track record in discovering mineral deposits. What are some of your key past successes?

A: Discovery is a team effort. Montero turned the Wigu Hill rare earth deposit in Tanzania from a mineral occurrence into a developed resource. Our board has decades of experience in mineral discovery and mine development: Greg Hall discovered gold and iron deposits in Australia, Tim Livesey advanced the Reko Diq in Pakistan, and Andrew Thomson and Jamie Levy have developed underexplored assets across key mining destinations. Together, we have the expertise to transform prospects into mines.

Q: The company is aiming for its next major discovery in Chile. What makes this region prospective?

A: Chile is one of the world’s premier mining jurisdictions and a major producer of copper, gold, and battery metals. Despite its long mining history, large areas remain underexplored and hold significant potential.

Q: Montero combines a boots-on-the-ground approach with modern technology to make mineral discoveries. How are you applying this in Chile?

A: In Chile, our teams conduct mapping and geochemical sampling, while also employing remote sensing, geophysics, and AI-driven geological interpretation to identify high-potential targets. This integrated approach enables us to discover and advance projects quickly and efficiently. We have followed this approach at our Avispa project and will extend it to new exploration properties.

Q: What will it take to be successful here?

A: Success in Chile will come from combining technical expertise, disciplined exploration, strong local engagement, and the investigation of multiple projects. We are applying lessons from past projects in Tanzania, Australia, Canada, Mexico, DRC, and Pakistan. Above all, careful project management remains key to turning promising targets into major mineral discoveries.

Q: Finally, how do companies like Montero deliver value to investors?

A: Montero creates shareholder value by discovering and advancing mineral deposits into producing mines. We combine boots-on-the-ground fieldwork, modern technology, and seasoned judgment to move underexplored prospects forward efficiently. By managing costs carefully, delivering credible technical studies, and progressing projects in a systematic, disciplined way, we transform exploration targets into economically viable deposits, unlocking long-term value for our investors.
